John Charles (1931-2004)

John Charles is classed as a true Welsh Legend. Although born in Swansea, the Cardiff fans have a really feeling of admiration for the man that was known as the ‘gentle giant'. Charles played his football all over the world with his clubs ranging from Swansea City, Juventus, Leeds United, AS Roma and of course - Cardiff City. He made 68 appearances for the Bluebirds scoring 18 goals between 1963 and 1966. John finished his playing career at Ninian Park before going on to manager Merthyr Tydfil and Hereford. John received 38 international caps for Wales between 1950 and 1965 scoring 15 goals in the process. John holds the incredible feat of having never been shown a yellow or red card in his whole playing career. In 2004 he suffered a heart attack and required partial amputation of one of his feet for circulation reasons. He then died on 21st February 2004 in Pindersfield Hospital, Wakefield. His legend still lives on and many Cardiff City fans have campaigned to name on of the stands at their new ground after the great man.

John Toshack

Tosh is another player that Cardiff fans look upon with fond memories for his time he spent at the club. Scoring 74 goals in 162 games made him a hero around Ninian Park and many fans were devastated when he left the club to join Liverpool in 1970. He of course now manages the Welsh national team in his second stint and has included Cardiff players Joe Ledley and Chris Gunter in his recent squads.

Len Davies (1899-1945)

Len is one of Cardiff's all time leading goal scorers after hitting 128 goals in 305 games for the Bluebirds. Cardiff born Davies was part of the most successful Cardiff side to date that included the 1-0 victory over Arsenal at Wembley in the 1927 F.A Cup final. Len notched up 22 International caps for Wales scoring 12 goals. Len died in Prescot, England of pneumonia in 1945.

Nathan Blake

Nathan played for Cardiff between 1990 and 1994 making over 130 appereances for the club and scoring 35 goals. Although born in Cardiff - Blake joined the Bluebirds having been released by the Chelsea youth set up in 1990. He scored many important goals and many Cardiff fans will remember his curling shot against Manchester City in an F.A Cup game at Ninian Park as one of his best for the club. Nathan always admitted that he would have loved to have returned to Ninian Park but never made it and the closest he came was playing for near by Newport County.

Robert ‘Earnie' Earnshaw

Earnie is still one of the most popular players ever to grace the Ninian Park pitch. His cheeky manor and ability to score loads of goals made him a true cult figure around South Wales. Earnie was a product of the Cardiff Youth system and although being born in Zambia- his mother originated from Canton and has always classed himself as Cardiff born and bread. He managed to score 85 goals in 175 appearances during his time at Ninian Park and was instrumental in Cardiff's rise through the divisions during the early 2000's. Earnie has 32 International caps to date scoring 12 goals along the way. He has the record of scoring hat-tricks in all 4 English divisions, The F.A Cup, League Cup and International level. Although now playing his football away from Cardiff - Earnie has admitted that he would love to return to the Welsh Capital one day.

Phil 'Joe' Dwyer

Phil holds the record number of appearances for the Bluebirds – 471 between 1975 and 1985. Phil also gained 10 Welsh caps and was a massive hit with the Cardiff fans after getting 41 goals in his time at Ninian Park. Phil is still regarded as the all time best Cardiff player among a lot of city fans and who can argue with that amount of appearances.

Fred Keenor (1894-1972)

Fred Keenor was the FA Cup winning captain in 1927. He was labelled as the ‘Playboy’ of the team after his hard hitting lifestyle which caused complications that lead to his death in 1974.
